How to cook home fries in the air fryer?
Onion is the perfect addition to homemade air-fryer home fries. I’ve added onions to this recipe since I like to serve home fries with roasted onions. So, depending on your preferences, you can cook them with or without onion.
Ingredients for air fryer home fries:
- 2-3 potatoes
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small onion (chopped)
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon paprika
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- Salt to taste
Instructions for air fryer home fries:
- Cut the potatoes into roughly 1-inch cubes after peeling them. Wash the potatoes very well, then pat them dry with a fresh kitchen towel or paper towel.
- Transfer the potato chunks to a mixing bowl, and toss them with oil.
- In a small bowl, mix the garlic powder, paprika, pepper, and salt.
- The seasoning mixture should now be added, and the potatoes should be thoroughly mixed.
- For 2-3 minutes, preheat the air fryer to 200 C/400F.
- Place the seasoned potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook them for 10 minutes at 200C/400F. Halfway through the cooking process, toss the home fries.
- Add the diced onions and cook them for 2 minutes more until the onions get tender.
- Remove the home fries and serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

What kind of potatoes make the best home fries?
The best potatoes to use for cooking air fryer home fries are russets. Because russet potatoes are low in moisture and high in starch, they make crispy, tasty fries. You can also use Yukon gold potatoes for making home fries.
You can use any variety of potatoes you have at home. However, the outcome may vary depending on the sort of potato you use.
What to serve air fryer home fries with?
Any meal would taste great with these crispy home fries as a side dish.
If you're preparing home fries for a quick breakfast, serve them with air-fried bacon and an omelette. This will make a simple breakfast that will fill you up and get your day going.
Enjoy them with your favorite dipping sauce as an appetizer or snack.
Recipe Tips:
- To ensure that the potatoes cook evenly, be careful to cut them into equal-sized pieces.
- In addition to the spices listed in the recipe, you can add any other spices you like.
- For the best possible result, toss the potatoes halfway through the cooking process.
- To ensure perfectly crispy home fries, arrange the potatoes in a single layer and do not overcrowd the basket.
- To prevent burning, add the onions or any other vegetables only at the very end of cooking.

Variations:
The air fryer home fries are simple to adjust to your preferences. You can try some of the following suggestions:
- If you would like to enhance the flavor to your taste, use different or preferred spices.
- In alternative to russet potatoes, you can also use Yukon gold or yellow potatoes.
- Add some diced bell peppers or chopped onion to the air fryer home fries.
- You can also make air fryer home fries from frozen.
Storage and Reheating:
The best home fries are those that are served hot and crispy and served with your preferred dipping sauce. However, you may keep the leftovers fresh by placing them in an airtight container and putting them in the refrigerator. They last for about 2-3 days.
Reheating: Place the home fries in the air fryer basket and heat them through for 1-2 minutes at 200C/400F.
Here are some of the frequently asked questions:
Why soak potatoes before air frying?
The excess starch in potatoes can be reduced by soaking them in water. Your home fries will get crispy as a result. Put the potatoes in cold water for 30 minutes to soak before cooking, then pat them dry.
How long does it take to cook fries in the air fryer?
Depending on the air fryer brand you're using, the cooking time for home fries in an air fryer may change. The thickness of the potato cubes is another factor that determines the cooking time. At 200C/400F, I cooked my home fries for 10–12 minutes.
Based on how crispy you prefer your home fries, you may adjust the cooking time.
Why are my air fryer home fries soggy?
Due to the overcrowding in the air fryer basket, the fries could become soggy. If there are too many fries in the basket, they will begin to steam rather than air fry. Therefore, arrange the potatoes in a single layer for the best results. This gives you the result and allows the hot air to circulate.
