Before jumping into the recipe I would like to give you instructions on how to slice an onion. Considering that some of my readers might be beginners and have no idea how to do it.
Let’s start by cutting off about ½ inch of the stem end and the root end. Once you cut off the ends the onion cover comes off easily.
Wash them thoroughly and cut the onion in half. Place the flat end down on the chopping board and slice it into thin half-moons or slice them vertically into strips.
The onion slices should be approximately ⅛ inch thick.
How to cook onions in air fryer?
Cooking onions in an air fryer is super easy and quick. The best part of this recipe is, all the ingredients are already available in your pantry. Plus you can use any type of onion for the recipe, so I’ve used red onions.
Ingredients for air fryer onions:
- 1 large onion (any type)
- ½ teaspoon vegetable oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions for air fryer onions:
- Start by slicing the onion by following the slicing instructions given above.
- Take a mixing bowl to add the onion slices, oil, salt, and pepper.
- Mix them thoroughly until well combined.
- Preheat the air fryer to 200C/400F for 3 minutes.
- Transfer the onion mixture to the air fryer basket. Spread the onions in a single layer and cook them at 200C/400F for 7-8 minutes or until they are golden on the edges.
- Toss the onions halfway through the cooking process to ensure the onions are equally cooked.
- Remove the air fryer caramelized onions and serve them depending on your liking and enjoy.

This recipe works great with any kind of onion. So, you can use any of your favorite onions. I’ve used red onions but you can make air fryer onions with yellow onions, and sweet onions.
